    1. Well, what was to be expected? They were ignorant of the harsh reality of the South in the 1960s. I believe that's called the "normalcy bias," where we naturally assume bad things won't happen to us, simply because it hasn't happened to us yet. Examples of the dangers of the normalcy bias are:

      - The Holocaust
      - 9/11
      - Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans

  6. In this film i see racism and people who want segregation and jim crow laws to continue with the separation of races. I also see white people being violent towards black people while they are using non-violence.

What I see: I see propaganda, portraying an idealist "White America"

What I hear: The speeches of various civil rights leaders and the song of a woman taking the Freedom Ride

What I think: Humanity is damned to repeat these atrocities, since we all fail to learn from our mistakes at some point or another.

    1. Because it goes against the status quo in the South. As you've said to us before, Mr. Eddelson, when the status quo is disrupted, it may bring about a revolution.

  11. What you hear?
    - I hear alot of hostility toward black people. Also people venting and expressing the mind state and how it was during civil rights movement. The background music I hear through the film is suspenseful.
    What you see ?
    - I see the similar Greyhound bus we had to anaylze yesterday in the film which was the Freedom Riders transportation to Albama and the rest of the southern area.

  12. What I come to see from this video is

    1) I see how segregation between the white and black. How blacks and white had to be separated . Also segregation on not only public transportation but there was also segregation on public places that the African Americans couldn't step foot in.

    2) i hear how the whites would threatened to kill the blacks on the bus. Using different types of names against them. While the black were only trying to desagregate public transportation.

  13. I hear voices of people that lived during that time there are also some of the freedom riders talking about their encounters during this time and how they felt.

I think that this is sad that this had to go on during this time but in the end it was for a purpose and for what they did we doing have to go though things like this today, even tho racism is still in the world today sadly.

    ReplyDelete
  14. its sad that they had to resort to killing them like that because that took it to a whole new level

    ReplyDelete
  15. The smoke that coming out the bus from the picture was the smoke bomb. The people that was in front of the bus sitting were getting fresh air.

    ReplyDelete
  16. i hear voices of people that tried to make a difference for generations to come they are talking about their experiences while doing this freedom ride adn all the problems they had to face along the way

    ReplyDelete
  17. i see people being attacked for trying to make a difference

    ReplyDelete
  18. what i see: i see people protraying america to be a white man's world.
what i hear: i hear various people, black and white, being interviewed stating important and harsh events that happened when the Freedom Riders reached Alabama.
what i think: all i could think of is how scared the people must've been on the bus and how heartless the white people were to shout "let's burn these niggers" and "put it in, put it in" .

    ReplyDelete
  19. i think this is sad becasue they just wanted equal right as everyone else and people are taking away basic rights from them

  21. Are these people suicidal? They're entering the worst place in the South for race in the 1960s, ruled by a possiblly repressed psychopath and they expect a minimal reaction? The Freedom Ride should've been ended when some of the passengers got beat up. If something like this happened today, I think it would be criminal activity, since it might be classified as reckless endangerment

  22. what i see- i see white and blacks having to be separated. they Grey hound bus has been set on fire and everybody who was in the bus rushed out and got really sick

what i hear- the greyhound bus is a bus ful of blacks and whites and they are trying to travel all the way to the new orleans which is the deepest south. a womens father used

what i think- I think that these laws are unfair. It's unfair that people of another color have to worry about their lives everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think that messed up what they did to them, and how the Sheriff reacted. There was no disciplinary action taken. All the sheriff had to say was "alright thats enough you've had your fun". The white people was even willing to kill their own kind if they favored the blacks.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The image that we say in class came from them all riding on a greyhound bus together mixed races, when people like the ku klux klan and others that want the segragation and jim crow laws all threw flash bombs and slashed the tires of the bus. when i first saw the bus i knew something bad had happened to the bus but now i know that it was a racial attack.

I hear the crucial words being said about the blacks and to the blacks.
I think the white people had taken the situation out of proportion.
My first impression was that the bus had just broken down, my reaction to it now is bearable. I can't believe how the whites had reacted to the arrival of the bus. It was and still is a harsh world...

  30. "When they go somewhere to create a riot..."
What are your thoughts of the media's perception of the freedom rides?

    ReplyDelete
  31. What I see? - What id basically I see total inequality no one cared for these innocent life and it seemed corrupt because cops and authority figures allowed it to happen.
What I hear?- what I hear are the voices of various people living in that time whether it be authority figures like cops, reporters, freedom riders, and even just people who simply lived in the community.
What I think?- This shouldn't even be a question of what I think because if anyone put themselves in the freedom riders shoes you would think it was unfair and also so cruel....it doesn't make any sense for people to have the racist thoughts and even not having any remorse to hurt their own people very badly.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I see a bunch of people who are fighting for there rights because that's honestly what they deserve. I see people who want to just be free. I see ignorant white people who just want to fight and solve there "problems" with violence. I see a twisted society, that had no morals.

I hear people preaching and protesting for there rights. I hear white men planning to attack the freedom riders. I hear the freedom riders fighting back for themselves.

I think how could people be so cruel beat up there own race just because they agree that blacks should be free. I think this is very sad to see how cruel people were and how they had so much hatred toward blacks for no reason.

    ReplyDelete
  33. what is see in this video is white men doing the at most violenece to these freedmon riders and colored people that want to dominate segregation.

  34. What i see : i see white people and blacks having to be separated because of racism. I also see the greyhound bus from the image in class on fire.

What I Hear : I hear people threatening to kill others, i also hear The stories of the freedom riders and how they felt and what happened.

-What I Think : I think what was going on was very wrong and very unfair. all people wanted was equal rights

    ReplyDelete
  35. I see: Obvious discrimination and segregation against black people by white people, extreme hate and bigotry.

I hear: The speeches and words of freedom riders and the angry shouts of mobs attacking.

I think: That a mindset is something powerful, something incredibly hard to change for the better.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I hear the woman whose father was laughing at the freedom riders trying to hrlp them and gice them water
I see that not every one has the same racist mentality. Even though some of thier parents were racist
I think that the freedom riders sacrificed a lot to fight for equal rights.

    ReplyDelete
  37. what i hear in this video is these freedom riders deffending there rights and i also hear these white men trying to kill them ... trying to hurt them in the best way that they can

  38. What i see from this video is that america was simply scared of change.I think president Jfk should've took more responsibilitie on the segregation issue.I understand he had problems on more of a International scale. But things like this make Ameerica

  39. I see a group of people trying to make a difference on this bus. They're also walking into segregated restaurants and having "sittings". i hear different opinions of people who went through this time as freedom writers even dome people who were against it . i think that you have too fight hard for what you want and even though shaun asks why . tragedy and violence needed to happen in order to grab peoples attention. Open people eyes. my initial view on the picture was the bus got into an accident now my view is its wrong for the freedom writers too go through what they went through but it needed to happen in order for the rye to be change.

  41. I see many racism towards the blacks and i also thatmany blacks had to sacrifies alot in order to get their point across.

I hear many people creaming and yelling.
I think that all those who stand up for what was right was very brave. I think that the police during those times were very harsh people because they could of prevented all those freedom riders from getting killed or injured.

  45. I see alot of violence and hate. the whites showed much hatred toward the blacks they wouldnt even serve them coffee. However all whites werent racist. On the grey hound buses there were blacks and whites that supported the blacks. I hear whites complainin about how they dont want blacks trying to push their way into their town. Also alot of the whites were saying how could the white people on the bus be doing this. They say they were betaying their own kind and how it just makes them want to punch them in the face. I think even though it seemed all whites were were racist and hated blacks it wasnt like that. there were whites that stayed with the blacks all the way. they helped the blacks when the racist whites tried to beat them and kill them. They were them for them when they need them most. Yeah there wasnt alot of white on helping the blacks but it was better for them to have some help than have none.

    ReplyDelete
  46. it must have to alot of courage and bravery for them to continue with the freedom ride.

    ReplyDelete
  47. What i see - What i see is the separation between white and blacks and that there is huge controversy over it. Also there was riots where every one one the greyhound bus got beat.
What i hear - What i hear is individuals being interviewed sharing what they experienced and all the emotions they had felt.
What i think - What i think is that all these laws are unfair as well as all the police officers allowing all the violence and riots.

  50. watching this film i have seen many blacks and whites have been beaten but they did not stop what they was trying to do which was trying to have equal rights. what i have heard from this film was all of the freedom riders had been fighting for their rights and alot of white men were trying to break them so they can return back to their hometown.

  51. my initial impression about the picture was i thought the ladie that was outside of the bus was sitting there because the bus had catched on fire. My answer was proven right the bus was caught on fire. I feel a way when i noticed what really had that women sitting their because i feel that they should have been lefted alone cause they were not doin anything wrong. I feel if we was in that position today majority of us would not have the guts to stand up to them because of the things blacks and some whites were put through.

What i hear ? I Hear Blacks being threatened by the whites

What I See ? I see black people fighing for what they believe in . Even after being attacked they still continued fighting for their rights and never gave up

    ReplyDelete
  56. I see that blacks and whites had to be separated. I see that the reason the bus was smoking was because the whites set the bus on fire
I hear people saying lets burn these blacks.i hear people not giving up and fighting for what's right.
I think that everything that's happening is really unfair because people of color have to live in fear

  58. Ummmmmm white people need to give up they disrespectful colored people are trying to make a positive life for them an us to live. Like the morgan VS virginia state case , morgan had won the case it had a breach in the barrier system of public transportation but the kkk and other southerners refused to obey and follow the law suit but to the whites segregation is an aspect of life but they need to let is live RNS

    ReplyDelete
  59. I see white people being harsh to colors because of there skin
I hear the screaming of colors being terrorized

    ReplyDelete
  60. What I see?
-I see the major separations made between the black and whites. The film depicts the immense racism toward the black people and how the white people would go to extremes in order to be separated from the blacks. For example: blacks had to sit in the back of the bus, they had to go around stores in order to enter, everything was labeled with either "colored", "whites"or "blacks" to show which race can use what.

    What I hear?
-I've heard about where the major signs of segregation take place. Places such as the south like New Orleans, Anniston & Luisiana. The greyhound bus was on their way to Birmingham to stop the separation between blacks and whites. On the way there the freedom riders were ambushed and a mob of people tried to kill them yelling racial slurs at them and calling the whites "nigger lovers" the mob desperately tried tried to stop this bus from leaving.

    What I think?
-i believe this is unfair. I support the freedom riders. Im glad that today the severity of racism and violence isn't as high. Althought I honestly doubt it'll ever go away.

    ReplyDelete
  61. i see freedom riders trying to fight for their rights.

    JFK's role before and after

    ReplyDelete
  66. Plessy v. Ferguson: Court case that deemed segregated facilities legal under the premise that they are deemed seperate but equal. This ruling was later deemed null in the court case Brown v. Board of Education. Even with the ruling in favour of civil rights, it was more of a cosmetic victory so to speak. Most schools remained whites/colored only for quite a while afterward.

JFK didn't have much of a role in the civil rights movement. He was more concerned with the "threat" of the Soviet Union. He viewed the freedom rides as more of a nuisance than somethign serious.

As I've said before: Jim Crow laws left the South in a state of apartheid.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They are, but the United States' federal government was not always held in high regard in the South. There's been a bit of a strained relationship between the Feds and the South.

      Examples:

1807(?) - South Carolina threatens to secede from the USA due to tariffs on imports

1860(?) - 11 states secede from the United States to form the Confederate States of America.

1862(?) - The Emancipation Proclamation is issued, effectively freeing all the slaves held in the South.

1865+ - Civil War ends, and reconstruction takes place. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the United States Constitution abolish slavery, give African Americans the right to vote, and equal protection under the law, which hypothetically ended the bondage of African-Americans everywhere in the South.

So, in essence, the South has always been the "problem child" for the Federal government. As a result, a natural resentment of the USA Federal government is understandable in the South.

  90. Plessy v.s Ferguson was a court case on homer plessy. he sat in a whites only bus and they asked him to leave but he refused so he was arrested. the case was taking to court were it was said that this went against the thirteenth and fourteenth amendments. at the end of the case the made a "separate but equal" law.

  91. It's sickening, indeed but when you think about it, it's really human nature to exile those who do not conform. You see it all the time in nature and in society: those who don't fit in are either exiled or killed.

  93. In the film the plessy vs. ferguson court case shows the descion of racial segregation. Is it worth being "separate but eual" and having violence and racism increase with each passing day?

  98. Plessy Vs. Ferguson case is very influential to the freedom writers because they will get the thought to get there point across they will have to sacrifice and take some kind of risk although it may have a bad outcome....I think of it this way What if they didn't do such things we would probably be living like this now in 2012 and that would be horrible

  102. in this film the plessy v. feguson rulling didnt really madea diference but they were still treated differently although they were "equal" they still didnt have the same advantages as the white man

    ReplyDelete
  103. I don't think I'll ever understand how people consider THIS equal or ever did consider this equal in any way! It's ridiculous to even CONTINUE living this way for so long. It's outrageous. It just shows how racist and corrupt our society was and in my opinion still is corrupt and racist.

  104. i think that the plessy vs. ferguson court case just made things worse in the sence that people begane to become more violent and that it did not help the cause at all

  106. Perhaps MLK saw the bigger picture at the time...that he was destined for greater purpose than riding buses and to risk his life at that moment would be somewhat irresponsible?

or perhaps he was simply human at the time and scared.

    3. something tells me you might be right, Marcus. and it did create a rift in the African American community. and perhaps opened the door to leaders such as Malcolm X who used slightly different methods to achieve the same end.

  107. nevertheless, MLK proved fearless toward the end of the Civil Rights Movement and faced his self prophesied death head on.

  108. so maybe the fear of rIding the buses gave him the strength he needed later on to be fearless. remember he was always a man of great peace and intelligence.

plessy vs ferguson was the joing of white and black people to use public facilities together
i think that rfk took so long is because he did not want the people to have equal rights he wanted to feel superior against the colored people

  113. The Plessy v. Ferguson ruling was the first progress achievement of the Freedom Riders, Black and Whites were equal but seperate but equal. In other words, blacks were grant access to establishments and etc with whites, however, seperated from them.

Jim Crow Laws were in favors of the whites in the south. The Jim Crows Laws upheld and kept the continuation of discrimination against segregation of blacks. In the film the freedom riders faced the worst of the jim crow laws. Although the Plessy v. Ferguson was enforced, the Jim Crow Law unminded that rulings against blacks. The freedom riders were arrested for the slightest little thing such as refusing to move from the areas reserved for the whites

  114. JFK didnt have much of A role in seperating segregation with the freedom riders..JFK was most likely concerned of the threat of the soviet union .. i feel like he wanted to restrict hiself from helping the freedom riders

  115. Jim crow laws - The segregation of public schools, public places, and public transportation, and the segregation of restrooms, restaurants, and drinking fountains for whites and blacks. The U.S. military was also segregated.

  117. PLESSY VS FERGUSON - A SURPREME COURT CASE FROM 1896....THE BLACKS AND WHITES WERE EQUAL BUT SEPERATED .

JIM CROW LAWS ..IN THE FILM BLACKS AND WHITES WHERE TO STAY SEPERATED THEY COULDNT GO TO THE SAME RESTROOMS ,CHURCHS , SCHOOLS , BUSSES , RETURANTS ..NOTHING !

JFK REACTED SOO SLOW BECAUSE ...WAIT MY LAPTOP IS DYING HOLD ON ...

  120. What you see :
I see a group of white people surrounding the bus, they are breaking the windows and popping the tires . The white people did this so they couldn't go anywhere.

    What you hear:
I hear the white people telling the others to put the bus on fire and calling the riders "niggers"
What you think: I think that the white people are so cruel an I wonder why they are doing such harsh things .

    ReplyDelete
  121. I feel that the jim crow laws played an enormous part in the plessy vs ferguson court case leading to the major increase of racism and violence

    ReplyDelete
  122. In 1896, the Supreme Court of the United States heard Plessy's case and found the law constitutional. Plessy paid the fine for the offense, but the case renewed black opposition to the laws.

The Jim Crow Laws imposed legal punishments on people who had associated with the other race. This law stated that, intermarriage was not allowed and notified business owners and public institutions to keep their black and white separated.

JFK was the first President who was sympathetic to racial discrimination, he didn't have much of a part in the civil rights. He was more concerned with the threat made by the Soviet Union.

  123. i think that naivete is the word of being naive very ignorant . they have a bigot way of thinking .The jim crowe laws was a way of degrading african american people mentally and socially .They were no mercy to this harassing and discriminating laws .I would see why core would want to do something and i can see why it was formed.I see why they started this noble movement . The thing is that puzzles me is that you have such a strong reinforcement for a cause that almost killed them all .They are very strong and its really strong what each individual did in this film.Even after being beaten almost into a pulp they still wanted to push on and keep on riding .I mean they were close to there goal and they werent so far i woulda pushed on too .

  125. jfk i felt didnt have the time to take care of this problem .He was dealing with the threat of nuclear war and the cold war at the time. But when things were getting insane in the south with the freedom riders that people were getting hurt and some bus's got bombed jfk still didnt have the time to even put his foot in he was still busy. The only thing that jfk said was that get those people off those bus .Even the vice president hoover got much more information the days before the beating .But he didnt even tell Jfk.

  126. jfk see finally showed some concerned and sent a government official and tried to move the frisk university students. but they will not move at all . and they told the governement official we signed our wills we are prepared.
