Watch Triangle Film online at:

1.  Where was the Triangle Shirt Factory?
2.  What year(s) did it operate?
3.  What social cause was being played out at the center of the factory?
4.  What tragic event occurred there shortly after?
5.  What dramatic social reforms were implemented as a result of this tragedy?

The film depicts an epic clash between workers who fought for unionization and better working conditions, and bosses who fought equally hard to keep their factories free of unions and regulation.     While watching the film, make note of arguments on both sides of this debate.
6.       Then answer: Which of these arguments do you consider most persuasive?
7.        What caused public opinion to shift from favoring the factory owners' arguments to supporting workers' demands for workplace regulation?

8.  Did you see our original image?  What was the meaning behind it?  How did it differ from what you previously thought?

    -eddelson

    1. the image I don't exactly know what it represented . In the movie the guy locked the door and it was said to be the only way out of the factory so I guess It represented capture or imprisonment . Like the workers were owned.

  14. I feel like the women who are working in the factories are being treated incredibly unfairly, and the owners of the factory are becoming paranoid due to loss of profit. I also feel that this paranoia and the working condition is what led to the high casualty count of the fire.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @castro - nice comment. i too see it both as a physical and metaphorical barrier for workers!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I beleive these woman were treated poorly. I beleive because of their background and who they were. Worst part most of these 500 women who worked at the factory started at a very young age working hard and long hours only getting minumum wage at the age of 13. Which reminds me about Child Labor..

    ReplyDelete
  30. families needed children to work and make money. thus childhood didnt really exist at all for most.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. thats the main reason for having so much kids for the support right?

    2. Probably, but I think another reason would just basically that they didn't use protection because it was just cheaper not to :P

  31. 20000 people went on strike they only got the weaker and smaller shirtwaists factories but the triangle factory did not give in

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. the owners probably didn't gve them any incentives like good conditions because they know the workers aren't going anywhere. Working at thale triangle shirt factory was like a good job back then . So what would the workers do if they don't get good conditions ? Quit. Haha , the owners would love to see that

  39. They Can Smoke In The Factories ??

    ReplyDelete
  40. #3 I think the social issue that was going on through the factory was that they wanted like better conditions sense they were so bad . and they wanted unions to be created so that they could have better safety while working in these dangerous factories.

    ReplyDelete
  41. go figure - you can work people like slaves but are allowed to smoke in the process.

    ReplyDelete
  42. SMH . so that's how the fire started . A freaking smoker caused it -.- inconsiderate . I bet it was probably an owner too .

    ReplyDelete
  43. was it a cigerate that started the fire cuz first of all who the hell is smoking in the sweatshop and second on the link at the top of the page it says that a match started the fire

  45. They Could Of Used The Buckets Of Water !

    ReplyDelete
  46. 3. The big social issue was simply that the workers wanted better rights and conditions for working but couldn't get them because of these bosses not caring and being money greedy

    ReplyDelete
  47. Mary Bucelli was smart. Nobody cared about her before the fire so why should she be considerate to others when it started . Do you babygirl and get out of that building by all means !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. The Light that we seen on the side of the door in our picture was the fire .

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  56. Buckets of Water? it's nine stories high, yo.

    ReplyDelete
  57. WOW! i never knew it was caused by a cigerate im thinking it was a over heated machine something that couldnt be provented but something as simple as that.. thats sad that everyone died to to that careless person.

    ReplyDelete

  59. 1. The Triangle Shirt Factory was located in lower east side Manhattan.
    2. It was operated from 1909-1911
    3. The social issue was that many of these woman took stands and eventually came to creating unions but knowing these bosses and their greed they would not give up at but also at the same time the factory workers would not settle

    ReplyDelete
  60. Did they die from the cigarette OR the lack of regulations of it and safety measures in the factory?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. both , i guess the cigarette was only a wake up call.

      Delete
    2. They died from the lack of regulations and safety measures. You cannot die from a cigarette like that. But if there was better safety measures like UNLOCKED doors . Workers could've gotten out faster and safely ... More workers could've survived

      Delete
    3. i think safety, cause if they had that in the first place and regulations none of this would have happened.

      Delete
    4. I would say both, because if there were more safety regulations. There would probably be no smoking in the factories and this would have never happened.

    ReplyDelete
  65. 4. A cigarette started the fire in the factory ending the lives of many workers. Most women burned to death, fell down elevator shafts, or basically commited suicide by jumping onto the sidewalk.

  77. 1. Where was the Triangle Shirt Factory?

The Triangle Shirt Factory was located in New York City.

    2. What year(s) did it operate?

The factory operated during 1909 until 1911

    3. What social cause was being played out at the center of the factory?

The cause that was being played out was unionization in the workplace.

    4. What tragic event occurred there shortly after?

An improperly put-out cigarette caused a fire, which ended up razing the factory, which caused one of the worst industrial accidents in the history of New York City.

    5. What dramatic social reforms were implemented as a result of this tragedy?

The public thought that industry should no longer be unregulated. Regulations were put into place, and a factory safety commission was created.

I consider the argument for the strikers to be most convincing, seeing as how the factory owners come across as arrogant and avaricious with their stance against th strikers.

    7. What caused public opinion to shift from favoring the factory owners' arguments to supporting workers' demands for workplace regulation?

The shift in public opinion was caused when J.P. Morgan Chase's daughter started to support the strikers. With such an affluent member on the striker's side, the public opinion changed drastically.

    8. Did you see our original image? What was the meaning behind it? How did it differ from what you previously thought?

The meaning behind the picture could be a symbol of negligence. With such a disregard to the safety of the workers, the picture could symbolize what can happen, if you neglect your workers. I didn't think about it, so I can't say it differred from what I originally thought since there was no thought to compare it to.

  78. Not only did the ladders did not reach but the fire escapes had collapsed during the rescue. they hardly had any easy access to water. A lot were trapped and squished because of the doors beinq locked. They had ran out of luck tryna find ways out of the building. Sucks

-The tragic event that started shortly after was a fire in a factory that a cigarette bud caused . This fire was important in history because after new York was aware of what happened in this factory they were pressured to make laws . The made laws that helped out workers in workplaces like this . They contained safety measures and other laws that benefits them.

  92. #5 they created laws to protect people from another tragedy from happening again such as maximum hours, minimum wage, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  93. 9. the image in the film was very different then what i thought it was. the image represented restriction of the employers and the light i think represented the fire that was going on. its crazy how a the door being locked contributed so much to alot of deaths

    ReplyDelete
  94. 4. What tragic event occurred there shortly after?
    - A Devastating tragic occurred at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. A fire started in the building on the 6th floor from a cigarette that rised to 9th floor with about 280 factory women workers unaware of the fire trapped on the floor with limited exits.
    5. What dramatic social reforms were implemented as a result of this tragedy?
There were several Labor Laws acknowledging poor working conditions and treatment of workers in factory. Building regulations were created in response to the closed door that could have saved hundreds of lives.

    4. the trajic event was that the cigarette had lit the factory in flams and many women died from trying to escape from the flames and jumped out windows and burning to death in front of peoples eyes
5.the dramatic social reforms was when people started to raise money for funerals and stuff helping the families who has lost anyone.
    6. i think the strikers are more convincing becuase they were pointing out very important things about how they need better working conditions and stuff to help them in working
    7. i think that the fire toke the union to final realize that it was time to have better working condition for all the workers
    8. i think that it toke the fire and from all thoose women dieng for the union to actually realize something

  99. 4.Tragic Event : A Fire Started By A Cigarette .
5.Dramatic Social Reforms : Set Standards For Minimum Wage && Work Hours && Better Working Conditions .Created Laws && Government Started To Get Involved .
    6. Most Persuasive Argument : The Strikers , Seemed Like The Owners Didnt Really Care , Took The Insurance Money && Dipped .
7.Public Opinion : Because They Knew The Owners Were Wrong && Because Famous People Such As J.P Morgan Chase's Daughter Got Involved .
    8. The Original Image : The Original Image Is To Show That The Doorknob Was A Major Part , If The Door Wasnt Locked , They Could Of Got Out && More People Would Have Been Alive .

    ReplyDelete
  100. #6 the argument that i think is more persasive is the workers like i would never be on the owner side because those were terrible conditions just imagine your self going through that.

#7They changed from the owners to the workers because many people died do to to conditions that they were in, in the first place so i guess it showed them how bad things really where there.

#8. i didnt see the image because i was blogging at the time but i could pretty much make a connection to what the image must resemble. the picture must have been the door to the factory and the light that we say through the door was the light of the blaze. i didnt really know why we had to look at a door knob but now everything really ties together i didnt even thing that far into it before.

    ReplyDelete
  101. 5. Regulations were finally put up in these factories. Unions began to form. This betters the safety of the workers. Its sad to know that it had to take so many lives of innocent women for people to realize that these factories NEED boundaries. I mean like without it what kind of society are we? We need to be able to support each other.
    6. In my opinion the strikers had reason to start unions. The strikers had numerous reasons to have regulations. They all put their lives on the line to support not only their own families but the families of others.
    7. J.P. Morgan's daughter supported these strikers as soon as this happened the public began to change sides.
    8. The meaning behind the doorknob represented the imprisonment of these women. The locked door showed their inability to escape being trapped in a hell hole.

    ReplyDelete
  102. #7 the amount of ppl that participated in the movement

    ReplyDelete
  103. 5. Social reforms that were implemented were labor laws.

6.I find the workers arguments are most persuasive because they were being treated unfairly basically taking advantage of. The people didnt deserve this its bad enough they had to work in the factory for hours under these bad working conditions.

    7. The public opinion shifted because famous people started to get involved like J.P Morgan Chase daughter.

    8. Yes i seen the original image, i also noticed it had no windows on it, it was just the flames coming off the door.

    6. The arguments of the strikers were convincing reason that they did not quit even though some of there demands were't met.
    7. It was caused by J.P Morgans daughter who took on to the woman's in the factories cause.
8.Yes. The meaning behind it was just that the woman didn't have freedom at all. It differed alot because we had to create the story which threw me off.

The Striker arguments I consider to be the most persuasive because the brought about the horrible working conditions they faced everyday
    7. What caused public opinion to shift from favoring the factory owners' arguments to supporting workers' demands for workplace regulation?
-The fire and the detail of the closed door and J.P. Morgan's daughter aiding the worker caused the public opinion to shift from favoring the factory owners' arguments to supporting worker' demand for work place regulation. So that they can prevent a predicament like what occurred at the triangle shirtwaist from happening.
    8. Did you see our original image? What was the meaning behind it? How did it differ from what you previously thought?
